Twitter Extends Lease for Chelsea Building

Columbia Property Trust signed a five-year extension of its lease to Twitter for all of the office space at 249 West 17th Street, a boutique Class-A office property in Chelsea.

The 215,000 s/f extension will continue Twitter’s lease through April 2030.

Twitter’s New York office has been located at the Chelsea property since the building was fully renovated in 2014 and is the global social media company’s second largest behind its San Francisco headquarters.

“We are very pleased to extend our relationship with Twitter at 249 West 17th Street,” said Nelson Mills, chief executive officer for Columbia, “and we’re delighted that this fully renovated and highly amenitized property, located in Manhattan’s premier neighborhood for leading tech and media companies, will serve as their New York home for years to come.”

Originally built in 1909, the fully-leased property includes a six-story western tower and interconnected 12-story eastern tower. In addition to Twitter’s occupancy, the building also houses Room & Board’s multi-story, high-end modern furniture showroom and a FlyWheel Cycle Studio.

In addition to 249 West 17th Street, Columbia’s Midtown Manhattan portfolio includes five other office properties, which are 315 Park Avenue South, 114 Fifth Avenue, 149 Madison Avenue, 218 West 18th Street, and 229 West 43rd Street, as well as a development project at 799 Broadway.

Christina Clark and Peter Sabesan from Cresa represented Twitter in the lease. CBRE’s Neil King and Paul Amrich handled the transaction for Columbia Property Trust.
